Agata Witkowska, legal counsel at Patpol Legal, comments the challenges facing the European Union and its new authorities for the next 5 years, for the Managing IP website.

In her opinion, three aspects are crucial:

1) increasing financial support for small and medium companies

2) removing obstacles to the free development of innovation by companies, which often face very expensive costs of patent processes or expensive proceedings under specific jurisdictions, which consequently makes it very difficult and sometimes even impossible to commercialize such innovations

3) clear regulations on cooperation between the EU and third countries in terms of reciprocal IP protection and support of SMEs’ innovation.
